Chances are pretty high that you are drinking at least one cup of coffee a day. Most of us do. While overdosing on coffee can be rough on your systems, especially for your adrenal glands, a moderate consumption of organic and high-quality coffee boosts some serious health benefits;
- It makes people better athletes. Studies have shown that caffeine increased stamina and better endurance if enjoyed within an hour before working out.
- It increases a woman’s libido! Who knew coffee could make a woman aroused? Animal Studies have found that females of the species who drink caffeine are more likely to have an increased sex drive. This is due to caffeine stimulating the part of the brain regulating arousal, causing an increase in blood flow to the genitals.
- It increases overall alertness and energy. When drinking coffee, caffeine enters your bloodstream and quickly finds its way to your brain, where it works as a stimulant. Caffeine blocks inhibitory neurotransmitters, such as adenosine, which would otherwise make us feel sleepy. It increases the levels of the feel-good chemical dopamine. These chemical changes lead to an increased state of alertness, potentially leading to quicker reaction times.
- While you might have heard that coffee is good for your brain and heart because it’s full of antioxidants, it’s also good for your gut because the polyphenols in coffee serve as prebiotics, feeding the good bacteria in the gut.
However, it can be quite acidic on the stomach too. Adding these following spices to your coffee will amp up the health benefits, all while rendering the coffee less acidic to your body. Now that’s what I call a win-win situation!
Here’s how to make your regular cup of joe into a super treat:
1. Ginger
Ginger has long been used to reduce gas and bloating because is has phenolic compounds which are known to relieve irritation in the GI tract.
2. Turmeric
You may have already heard that turmeric is a powerful herb for reducing inflammation? This includes inflammation in the gut. It helps to reduce inflammation intestines and improve intestinal barrier function.
3. Cinnamon
Cinnamon has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in addition to protecting against metabolic disorders, like diabetes. Cinnamon is also a natural way to sweeten up your coffee without using sugar.
5. Cardamom
Healers of the ancient Indian state sincerely believed that this spicy herb can cope with any disease. It is well known to restore the nervous system and helping the body remove slag products, aiding in weight loss.
Play around to find your personal flavour combination of preference. Personally I LOVE the combination of cinnamon and cardamom, occasionally adding in a bit of orange essential oil.
Cheers to that!
