Butterfly garden Montezuma

Written by Kajsa IngelssonMay 21, 2016

I always loved butterflies. They are so delicate yet vibrantly colorful as the float around from flower to flower without a care in the world.

So today I decided to pay a visit to Mariposario Butterfly Garden in Montezuma.

I learned that in many traditions around the world, the butterfly is a symbol of the soul or soul world. For example, in Chinese symbology, it can represent immortality. For the Japanese, a white butterfly symbolizes the soul the departed ones. In Ancient Greece, butterflies represent the psyche or soul, and its attribute of immortality.

Sadly, the modern reality for the monarch butterflies looks completely different.

What’s going on? Monarch populations have been dwindling, which seems to be related to a few major causes: disruption of migratory patterns due to climate change; loss of overwintering grounds in Mexico due to deforestation; and reduced acreage of their summertime milkweed habitat, especially in the mid-western U.S as well as the rampant use of the toxic GMO pesticide RoundUp.
