How to do self-care

Written by Kajsa IngelssonJune 25, 2018

Self-care is all the rage these days. But what is it really about more than #selfcaresunday and all those perfect instagram baths? Self-care has always been something important to me, ever since I, Kajsa Ingelsson, was a young teenager. From taking weekly baths, managing a skincare routine to the food I eat and drink, it’s an important act of self love. It’s about taking time for y o u and showing yourself that you are a vibrant, healthy, passionate, and loving person of worth.

American writer, feminist, and civil rights activist Audre Lorde summed it up beautifully, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.

A healthy person who has self-care imbedded in their lives is often a person who will inspire and bring others up and usually someone who will have the energy and space of mind to care for our planet. Self-care is also recognizing that something in your life is out of balance and taking the necessary steps to change and grow from that. To me, self care = personal growth.

How do you do it?

Well, it’s a personal preference really. What do you want to achieve with this change? What are your goals? Where do you need some change and love? Write it down on your bathroom mirror or post it on the fridge as a daily reminder to stick with it. Here’s some ideas for you to start your practice:

  • Take a deep breath, in and out.

  • Have a daily holistic skincare regime.

  • Hug people and/or animals!

  • Stop and smell the flowers, literally 🌸

  • Light a candle and burn some incense.

  • Sage your space and yourself, make space for new to come to you and set intentions.

  • Get naked, preferably in the sun..

  • Limit the time you spend behind a screen.

  • Eat a lot of fruit and veggies 🌱

  • Make sure that you only hang out with people who make you feel good and reflect on your morals and ethics.

  • Meditate (check the best apps for your phone and the best youtube meditations out to get started)

  • Start a new hobby.

  • Read books that inspires and enlightens!

  • Go to bed earlier = wake up earlier.

  • Go out dancing.

  • Take a warm bath.

  • Sing and make noise, flutter your lips!

  • Get a massage.

  • Exercise.

  • Burn some palo santo.

  • Take a cooking class for healthy eating.

  • Learn pranayama or breath work.

  • Practice earthing, aka root own into mother earth barefoot (personal favorite of mine)

  • Keep a gratitude journal.

  • Find a mentor.

  • Journal.

  • Perform random act of kindness each day.

Choose one to two things from each category; it can be something more related to your goal. Start with something whatever calls out to your heart!

In the next post I’ll start sharing my very own self-care routine so stay tuned 🙂
